Living Things: from Macroscopic to Microscopic

Camp Description
During this one-week camp participants will see the world with new eyes as they learn to study it as a biologist.
We will examine living things from the smallest bacteria to the squirrels and birds that make their home on the RIT campus. We will use microscopes, GPS devices, nets and computers to observe, analyze and interpret the living world around us.
Learning and fun will blend together to create an unforgettable experience. This camp is the perfect opportunity for youths interested in biology to have access to RIT's natural environment, world class laboratories and faculty.
Sample Investigations
- Why do insects do what they do?
Participants will design and perform experiments to study insect behavior and connect their findings to the habits of insects in their natural environment. - How wild is the RIT campus?
Recorded observations and GPS computer technology will assist campers in studying biodiversity on campus. - What does DNA look like?
Campers will extract DNA from cells for a first-hand look at this essential molecule for all living things.
Other Notes
Campers are expected to bring a lunch.
Snacks will be provided during the day.
Students should come dressed appropriately for travel around campus.
