Awakening potential
CBET offerings in K-12 Education are designed to introduce students to the myriad possibilities of careers in the fields of medicine and bioscience. Programs feature expert instruction, hands-on learning and access to the latest technologies. Some examples:
Summer M.A.S.H. Camp:
You’re a doctor facing a patient’s medical emergency. What do you do? The Medical Academy of Science and Health summer day camp program gives teenagers hands-on experience at medical diagnostics, from physical exams to lab tests. Offered in partnership with the Western New York Area Health Education Center and other area universities and hospitals, M.A.S.H. camp gives students a close-up look at the realities of a career in medicine. CBET also is developing a C.S.I. camp of hands-on forensic science research for mock crime scene investigations.
College and Career Days:
Several times a year, high school students may visit the RIT campus to explore career options in biotechnology and medicine. One-hour sessions in such areas as medical diagnostics and bioinformatics give hands-on experience and a real-world peek at what it would be like to study these subjects at the college level. Our annual Medical Sciences Career Days event is planned tentatively for March 1, 2010. This event is organized through the high school administrative offices. Inquiries may be made in early September to reserve spaces in select sessions.
Classroom teaching:
CBET instructors are available to visit K-12 classrooms to complement the school curriculum with guest lectures and demonstrations. (See K-12: Educators.) In addition, educators may arrange field trips for students to learn from RIT faculty and use the university’s technological resources in medical imaging and biotechnology.
Rochester Biomedical Experience:
CBET is partnering with Monroe Community College on a program funded by the National Institutes of Health to increase the number of underrepresented minority students prepared to enter biomedical science careers. Qualified high school seniors participate in a Saturday College program that meets twice each month from January until June. Once these students graduate from high school, they may be selected to attend a five-week Summer Exploration in Biomedical Sciences that involves classroom training, lab work and hands-on interactions with students and faculty from both campuses.
