Professor O'Dea obtained a BS in Physics from MIT and a Ph.D. in Astronomy from Univ. of Massachusetts, Amherst. He held postdoctoral fellowships at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and the Netherlands Foundation for Research in Astronomy. He was a tenured Astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute before joining the Physics faculty at RIT in 2004.  He has studied Active Galaxies and Clusters of Galaxies for over 25 years and has published over 180 refereed papers. He has organized nine scientific conferences and served on many proposal review panels and time allocation committees. He is currently chairman of the board of the NY Astronomical Corporation.

Job Responsibilities

Professor O'Dea teaches University Physics and a graduate course in Radiative Processes. He is on the faculty of the Astrophysical Sciences and Technology Ph.D program.

Research Interests

Professor O'Dea's research on Active Galactic Nuclei (Radio Galaxies, Quasars, Seyferts) is focused in the areas of life cycles of activity, including triggering of activity, fuelling activity, the early states of radio source development (GPS and CSS sources), propagation of jets, repetitive activity, and interaction/feedback with the environment. He is also active in the area of the physics of the ICM in cluster cooling flows and the nature of heating/cooling via observations of cold gas and star formation in brightest cluster galaxies.
