Isolation and characterization of bacteria from various water sources capable of degrading personal care products and pharmaceuticals

My lab is attempting to isolate bacteria that can degrade compounds such as triclosan, ibuprofen, naproxen, gemfibrizol, and indomethacin which are able to avoid degradation at waste treatment plants and end up in the receiving waters here in Monroe County. We have isolated some interesting bacteria from Lake Ontario and the Genesee River that degrade triclosan and also are resistant to as many as 10 different antibiotics. We are extending our studies to other waters and compounds.
