River Otter Research Project

Above: River otters are found in all aquatic habitats, from freshwater creeks to marine coasts. These otters were observed in British Columbia and are using an abandoned dock as a latrine site.

River otters were recently reintroduced into our local waterways by the New York River Otter Project. We are monitoring this population by canoeing and hiking the creeks off the Genesee River to look for evidence of otters. We collect scat for diet and genetics analysis, mark GPS coordinates to analyze habitat use with GIS software, and use remote video cameras to record their undisturbed behaviors.
