Short Biography
 
Dr Qiao obtained her Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001 and her M.S. in Precision Instruments and Fine Mechanics from Tsinghua University in 1997. She has recently obtained a M.B.A, concentrating in Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Finance, and Competitive & Organizational Strategy, from the Simon Graduate School of Business, University of Rochester. Her research interests lie in Optical Metrology, Optical Instrumentations, Adaptive Optics and Active Optics, Segmented Large-Scale Optics Alignment and Testing, Laser Pulse Compression, Ultrafast Laser Systems and Applications, and Optical System Design and Performance Evaluation.
 
Dr. Qiao has 7 years of industrial R&D and production experience in startup and corporate settings, focusing on optical imaging and non-imaging design, grating-based optical (de)multiplexer design, fabrication and characterization, SBIR grant application and project management, visible and infrared audit lens, detector development, MTF and optical testing instrumentation development.  Dr. Jie Qiao also worked as a scientist in short-pulse laser systems and optical technologies at Laboratory for Laser Energetics, University of Rochester from 2005 to 2013 where her research work focused on segmented large-scale grating alignment and metrology, optical system modeling for laser pulse compression and focusing, adaptive and active optics design, laser diagnostics, and laser system performance evaluation.
 
Dr. Qiao holds two US patents, has authored and/or presented over 40 scientific contributions in national and international journals and conferences. She served as the Program Committee Co-Chair for the International Committee on Ultra-high Intensity Lasers (ICUIL) 2012 conference.
 
Dr. Qiao is very interested in technical entrepreneurship and technology commercialization. She led the Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) prototype development by Radiant Photonics Inc. in 2001 during the technology commercialization phase of her Ph.D. thesis. She was a board member of the Overseas Chinese Entrepreneurs Association from 2003 to 2005. She has recently given a lecture on “Technical Marketing on High-tech Products and Innovations” at the Simon Graduate School of Business, University of Rochester and at the Antai College of Economics & Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
 
Dr. Qiao is the Founder and Chairperson of the organization WiSTEE Connect that has been created to connect women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Entrepreneurship across universities and industries in the Rochester region. It grew from the WiSTEE group that she previously created while at the University of Rochester. WiSTEE Connect’s vision is to promote women's leadership in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Entrepreneurship (STEE), bridge the gap between Science, Technology, and Business, and provide a forum to learn, connect and lead. WiSTEE Connect aims to provide concrete support to help women gain regional connections and global impact in STEE fields.
