Her research interests are in the behavioral ecology of birds, and current research in her laboratory focuses on the ecology and evolution of hummingbird song. She has written an introductory Environmental Science textbook due to publish in February 2012. Dr. Houtman came to RIT with experience at a variety of private and public institutions, which gives her a broad perspective and a wide view of the education landscape. She is strongly committed to evidence-based, experiential education and has been an active member since 1994 of Project Kaleidoscope Faculty for the 21st Century, a national science education reform organization.
