Population Genetics
Mitochondrial haplogroups and human diversity.

Potential Research Project

The 16.5 kb human mitochondrial genome contains thousands of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A subset of these SNPs are used to define haplogroups that correlate with populations and are used to study population genetics, ancient human migrations and disease associations. Much literature has been published that associates certain alleles with one or more haplogroups, but no public database is available that identifies SNPs with haplogroups. We are constructing a searchable database with information that links haplogroups with SNP alleles and the location/functional consequences of each variant.
