Abstract:

In this talk, we will describe the activities of the newly established Counterterrorism Research Lab towards the development of a toolbox for counterterrorism (CrimeFighter). The toolbox is designed based on past experiences working with investigative data mining, mathematical modeling, social network analysis, graph theory, link analysis, knowledge management, and hypertext. We will start by briefly presenting the Counterterrorism Research Lab (including collaboration and funding efforts) and our previous work leading to the toolbox ideas. CrimeFighter builds on ideas, concepts, algorithms, and user interfaces previously developed in relation to tools such as iMiner focusing on counterterrorism as well as ASAP and Construct focusing on knowledge management and structuring. We will continue by presenting the concepts and features of CrimeFighter. CrimeFighter will consist of a knowledge base and a set of tools that each support different activities in criminal investigation work: data acquisition tools supporting web harvesting, knowledge structuring tools supporting information analysis, explorer tools for searching and exploring the knowledge base, algorithms for data mining, algorithms for visualization, algorithms for social network analysis, etc. We will conclude by describing the current status of our work as well as future plans.
