Program Information



The Application Process:

If you're new to undergraduate research, you'll want to get your feet wet doing an introductory research before committing to the Scholars program. Start by cruising the faculty mentors page, contact someone who is doing something intriguing, and sign up with them for a lower-level research course, Bio Sci 1001-291.

If you got a little experience and would love to do your own serious research project, you're ready to apply to the Scholars Program. Applying is easy, and you may apply to begin the program at the start of any quarter. Make sure that you meet the minimum acceptance criteria (below). Then, write your initial research plan under the guidance of your chosen mentor, complete the application packet (guidelines below).

Applications are accepted at any time!

If you turn in your application (to Nicki Bruno in Biology Dept. office) by noon on Friday of Week 1, you can start in the current quarter. Otherwise, your application will be reviewed and you will start the program in the following quarter.

Minimum Acceptance Criteria:

  • Previous Research Experience:
    • Completion of at least one Directed Research Course (this is a new course that was initially offered by Dr. Ferran. Email Dr. Frederick for more information on when it will be offered again)
    • Or completion of a lower-level research course with a faculty mentor (Bio Sci Research 1001-291)
    • Or demonstration of other significant research experience and endorsement of a mentor
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Consent from proposed faculty mentor (mentor must indicate consent via signature on the application form)
  • Brief Initial Research Plan written by student
  • Willing to accept program requirements including:
    • A minimum 3 quarter commitment to research project (3 quarters may be non-consecutive)
    • Must submit quarterly updates of research plan
    • Graded oral presentation during second quarter of program.
    • Final written presentation (paper) during last quarter of program.
    • Must receive a grade of B or better in the RSP research courses to remain in the program.

Application Packet:

  • Application form (download from Forms Page):
    • Including faculty consent signature
    • Including your signature indicating that you agree to the program requirements if accepted
  • An (unofficial) copy of your transcript
  • Initial Research plan (guidelines) w/ cover page (download research plan cover page from Forms Page)

Submit all application packet to Nicki Bruno in the Biology Department Office. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but must be submitted by noon on Friday of Week 1 in order to start the program in the current quarter.

The application committee meets quarterly to review applications. Based on faculty recommendations and minimum criteria being met, the committee will send welcome letters to qualified candidates.
