Adding and Subtracting Vectors
It is not at all easy to label vectors with an arrow over the letter (V1 etc.) in this animation. Remember that hand-written vectors should have the arrow to signify that they are vectors.
The vectors V1, V2, V3 are fixed in size and direction, but can be moved by dragging the circles at their tails. The Sum vector can by dragged and changed in size and direction, and its components are shown in the table to the right of the grid.
- Arrange the vectors to show the sum V1+V2+V3.
- Here are the components of the vectors V1, V2, and V3. Verify that the components of the sum shown on the diagram are correct.
| Vector |
x-component |
y-component |
| V1 |
2 |
4 |
| V2 |
7 |
-3 |
| V3 |
-12 |
10 |
- Find the magnitude and the direction (angle from the x-axis) of the sum.
