The Nathaniel Rochester Society is proud to recognize outstanding NRS volunteers at the annual NRS Gala. Two prestigious awards are given to recognize individuals who’s work on behalf of RIT demonstrates unparalleled dedication to the university and its mission:
NRS Award
The Nathaniel Rochester Society Award, established in 1972, is given annually to
recognize individuals who have contributed to the advancement of Rochester Institute of Technology in an outstanding and significant manner.
The award, contemporary in design, was created by Leonard Urso, an internationally recognized, award-winning silversmith and professor in RIT’s School for American Crafts. The presentation piece embodies the timeless values of past, present and future. Its simple geometric design is elegant and personal. This award has the added distinction of having been permanently endowed through the generous gift of Marcus and Kathryn Barbour, charter members of the society.

Whitaker Service Medallion
In 1967, RIT Trustee Gaylord “Gee” Whitaker founded the Nathaniel Rochester Society and served as its first chairman. Under his thoughtful and sensitive leadership, “Gee” successfully guided NRS during its formative years, laying the foundation for the vital organization it is today. The Whitaker Service Medallion recognizes NRS members who contribute to the Society through outstanding volunteer service and leadership.
