Workshop Description and Goals

 

Attend the 5-day Using Linux in a Programming Environment workshop June 9 - 13 at a cost of $500, at NTID/RIT in Rochester NY. The workshop will start each day at 8:30 AM and end at 4:00 PM.

 

This workshop is intended for users who wish to use Linux on a regular basis and wish to be able to manage their environment, support multiple users, share files, operate a web server (Apache), and take advantage of some of Linux’s shell scripting power. The workshop will focus on pre-configured Linux workstations. Sessions will include discussions of the topics below, followed by intensive lab activities allowing participants to apply the networking, shell, programming, administrative, and scheduling concepts they learn.

 

Topics

  • Using the bash shell and its benefits.
  • Networking and remote connectivity (vpn, ssh, vnc).
  • Maintaining system updates and security, including firewall configuration using Firestarter.
  • Using common shell and utility commands.
  • Creating and managing user accounts.
  • Process management and scheduling.
  • Using administrative tools such as software management, log files, and group management.

Prerequisites

 

Workshop participants should be familiar with basic operating systems concepts and have a working knowledge of a programming language. Programming language knowledge should include being comfortable with the following concepts: parameter passing, recursion, variable assignment, scope, loops, conditional statements, and return values. Previous exposure to Linux is helpful, but not required.

Mark Wambach - Workshop Leader

Mark Wambach is an Assistant Professor for the College of NTID, at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), in Rochester, New York. Mark has MS degrees in both Computer Science and Instructional Technology. He as worked for RIT for twenty years. He has also owned his own software development company for 21 years. Mark currently works for the department of Information and Computing Studies, where he is coordinator of support services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in RIT’s Golisano College of Computing Studies. Mark teaches programming, OS Scripting, and server administration classes for his department and Golisano College.
