2008 Women's Volleyball

The RIT women’s volleyball season has come to a close after recording an 18-23 overall record.  The ladies had a 5-3 conference record and were seeded 4th in the Empire 8 tournament.  The Tigers lost to top-ranked Stevens in the semifinals of the Empire 8 tournament.

The team has experienced a rebuilding year in which several freshmen saw significant playing time.  Freshmen Megan Henriksen played in 151 games and led the team with 482 digs.  Freshman middle-hitter Laura Mooney played in 149 games and was named Empire 8 Volleyball Rookie of the Week for the week of October 6th.

The team was anchored by three strong seniors including Nichole Boxler, Kate Gleason, and Heidi Little.  Junior Vic Petko also had a very strong season.

Boxler, a setter, recorded 1,281 assists along with 297 digs, 112 blocks and 138 kills.  She completed her career with 4,258 assists and earned honorable mention in the Empire 8 for the second consecutive year.

Gleason tallied 436 digs and led the team with 65 service aces.  She earned RIT Athlete of the Week honors and was also voted Empire 8 Volleyball Sportswoman of the Year.

Little, a middle-hitter, had career highs in kills, assists, and digs.  She had 246 kills and was named RIT Athlete of the Week after she slammed 49 kills and had 16 blocks during a 3-2 week for the team.

Petko, a middle-hitter, tallied 545 kills and became the 12th player in RIT Volleyball history to record 1,000 career kills.  She also had 144 blocks and was named to the Empire 8 All-Conference team for the second straight year.  Petko will play an integral role in the success of the team next year.

After a somewhat disappointing season, Coach Roger Worsley is expecting a solid winning season next year.  With the success of Vic Petko and the growth of the freshmen class, the foundation has been set to achieve great things in the 2009 season.
