Cake!!! Art You Can Eat...

Clarissa Baston on Wednesday, 07 October 2009. Posted in Dining, Life After RIT, Majors & Minors

If you have read my profile or some of my previous posts, then you know that I have a passion for baking, mainly baking cakes.  For the past year, I have been doing favors for family members and friends to get some practice on my cake making skills.  After I graduate, I plan on attending the French Culinary Institute in New York City. (That is if I get in.)  So when I tell families that visit the office my dreams of cake making, they often give me a confused look and ask what would posses me to do such a thing, especially when I go to a college that has little to do with mastering the art baked goods.  I just smile and explain to them how my major (Illustration) really convinced me to go for it and that I wouldn't be abandoning anything that I have learned at RIT.  In fact, I took a class called Dimensional Illustration and my professor showed us how food, including cake, was used to illustrate stories.

I always wanted to go to pastry school, but it was a field that I knew so little about, I wanted to stick with what I knew and what I was good at.  So that's why I became an art kid instead.  But as the months passed, I fell out of love with my major and was just kinda floating around building 7, (The art building) going to class, pretty uninterested in anything.  It sounds awful, but it happens to everyone.  Some people find ways to get back in to groove, while others find a different path that they want to pursue.

I rekindled my passion for pastry one New Years' Eve, I was stuck babysitting my little brothers while my parents were out at a party.  I had just put them to bed, so I went to my living room to watch some TV.  After a few minutes of channel surfing, I came across the Food Network and there was an Ace of Cakes marathon.  I watched a couple episodes and I thought it was pretty cool.  But what really caught my attention was that almost most of the staff were art students.  It got me thinking about how being creative can be applied to almost anything!  It was just the spark I needed...

So I guess the moral of my story is that when you get into a major, don't worry it is not set in stone.  Sometimes its more like a stepping stone.  Some people know exactly what they want to be, while others go through a trial and error process.  Even though I probably will not pursue Illustration after I graduate, I am glad and grateful that I did get the training that I did from RIT because it helped me figure out what I really want to do.  And it's not like I'm letting my art skillz go to waste either!

So far, I have a few cakes under my belt.  Here are some pictures!
