Ever since I was younger, I have always had a passion for music. I have been a band geek since I was in elementary school and have played in the concert band at RIT. But if there is one thing I love, it is live music. In high school, if my friends wanted to go see a small concert, they would always ask for me to come along. It does not bother me if I don’t know every song of the artist, I just like the atmosphere.
RIT has hosted a variety of major concerts for the students, faculty and community to attend. During my first two years at RIT, I attended performances by Cartel, Yung Joc, OAR, Girl Talk, Maroon 5, 3Oh!3 and Snoop Dogg. Some other past performers include Sum 41, 50 Cent, Rihanna, Jack’s Mannequin, Ben’s Fold, Taking Back Sunday, Three Days Grace, and Jason Mraz to name a few.
RIT students receive a discount on the major concert events that take place on the RIT campus with their student ID. For some major events, student can actually purchase up to 4 tickets at the discounted price, which I personally found beneficial for when my sister and friends came to visit to see a performance. The tickets for the events at RIT can be purchased at the RIT box office, located in the Gordon Field House and Activities Center.
If you are not into the major concerts, there are also smaller performing groups that take place in the venues around RIT. I remember attending performances by the Eastman School of Music Orchestra, as well as other Jazz Bands and Folk performers. I know student organizations and performers also take place regularly throughout the year.
When I was looking at schools, I remember fearing the lack of music at some of the schools I visited. I now know that music is a strong part of the RIT campus life, making the campus and even better match for me.
