GLBT Center and Speaker Series!

(December 04 2007) Written by: Cory Gregory in LGBT

Hey everyone! After a nice two week break, I'm glad to be back at school.

As I've mentioned in previous posts, I am the GLBT Senator in Student Government. This means that I represent the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender community at RIT. Since the beginning of the school year, I have been meeting with the director for the Center for Campus Life to plan both the opening of a GLBT Center on campus and also a GLBT Speaker Series! I am very excited that both are occuring on Friday!

Just over 100 colleges and universities throughout the United States have a resource center/safe zone for GLBT students, faculty, and staff. I am very excited that our GLBT Center will be open soon because there are many students as well as faculty and staff members that will benefit from the resources available. Faculty, staff, and students that have helped in bringing a GLBT Center to RIT have been invited to celebrate the opening.

Comedian Mike DeStefano will be performing at RIT on Friday night in the CAB: Friday Night in the Ritz series. He is the first performer in the GLBT Speaker Series that we have been planning. As a heterosexual male, he will be presenting a personal story, named "Can I Borrow Your Closet?", in which he describes how he looked to the GLBT community for help after he became HIV positive.

We have also planned two other presentations that will occur throughout the school year. Sheryl Swoopes, a professional and well-known WNBA player, will be presenting February 2nd on life as an openly-gay athlete and Dragonsani Renteria and Jennifer Mantle will be presenting on April 9th or 10th on issues that affect transgender and transsexual individuals.

I am very excited to see all the planning and preparing we have done for these events finally pay off! I love representing the GLBT community and, I know that someday, all the hard work that myself and many others do will benefit the community as a whole.
