Ice-Skating Downtown

Each winter Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park, located in the heart of downtown Rochester, is transformed into an outdoor skating rink.

This week I went out to lunch with another student ambassador, Helen, during our lunch break. While we were talking, we randomly decided that we were going to go ice-skating after work that night.

There are plenty of free skates held right on campus in Ritter Arena, but there is something cool about skating outside surrounded by the city lights. I loved going to that outdoor rink when I was little, but hadn't been back in years. I was even more excited to bring Helen to this wintery treasure when she mentioned she had never skated outside before!

We just so happened to pick one of the coldest nights thus far to go skating, but we were determined. After work, we layered up and headed downtown.

There were only of handful of other people braving the cold to skate that night. The ice was nice and smooth, and lights surrounded the rink. Music blasted over the speakers. Helen, the co-founder of the women's club hockey at RIT, made it look easy. Skating backwards and making turns like it was nothing. I was just happy slowly skating in one direction trying not to fall.

After our ice-skating adventure, we decided to warm up with hot chocolate. It felt so nice to be inside, sitting, skates off, with hot chocolate in hand.

If you are looking for something fun to do in Rochester this winter season, I highly recommend checking out this ice rink. Be on the look out for special events and holiday specials! It was only $5 for adults, and another $3 if you needed to rent skates. We parked for free at the Rochester Museum of Play, but there were closer spots if you had change to feed the parking meters.
