Leadership Can Be Fun

Megan Chapman on Wednesday, 22 September 2010. Posted in Clubs

This is coming a little after the fact, but still coming.

Last Friday night and Saturday, September 17 and 18, I attended the RIT Leadership Institute Fall Leadership Retreat.  This is basically an overnight or event that the Institute holds every quarter that promotes leadership and is generally a lot of fun.  I was unaware of these retreats until I became a part of the Student Advisory Board for the Institute.  Needless to say I had a blast being a Leadership mentor to a group of RIT students and just having some fun.59923_498823764501_739614501_7071195_5339754_n.jpg

(An activity in communication)

The retreat was held at Camp Stella Maris, a summer camp on a lake about 30 minutes away.  A group of about 60 students stayed in cabins with bunk beds and we participated in group leadership activities and a high and low ropes course.  Some of the highlights of the night included singing around the bonfire at the edge of the lake and climbing ladders and ropes up in trees in very unattractive climbing harnesses.  My group had some challenges at first overcoming the language barrier between the deaf/hard of hearing students and the hearing students.  Some of the students in my group were freshmen and they stated that this was a great challenge and learning experience in communication for them.

(Meeting new friends and being silly)

Yes, the activities did build my leadership skills, but I also had a lot of fun and met a lot of new friends from many different walks of life who I can now say "Hi" to while walking down the quarter mile.  Are leadership activities a good resume padder? Yes.  But can they be fun at the same time?  Just ask anyone who went on the retreat and they will say yes! 60993_498852989501_739614501_7071726_5738227_n.jpg

Sounds like fun, I've always heard about this but have never actually gone. Any pictures from the past weekend?
