Less Than One Week Away: College and Careers July 2012!

Hey everyone!

My name is Alyssa and I’m so excited to say that this is my first blog as a Student Ambassador!  I’m a Biomedical Science major who has more jobs and leadership positions than fingers and toes combined and is addicted to Zumba and cupcake baking, and I’ll be a senior in the fall!  To find out more about me check out my Ambassador profile and continue to follow my blogs that will be popping up every now and then!  2 years ago I was hired by the Admissions office to help with a campus program that I had not a clue about, called College and Careers.  Well, I quickly learned all about this awesome opportunity that is offered to high school students the summer before their senior year.  The first session is coming up this week and it brings so much excitement: not only hitting my 2-year mark as an Ambassador but also being able to take part in one of the best events of my entire year…even though I am not a participant, it is one of the absolute highlights of my summer, and I know I’m not the only one to say that!  Let me tell you, and show you, a little bit more about it… :)

College and Careers was set up for high school students to explore many options of college majors and career possibilities while spending the night on RIT’s campus in a dorm room with a roommate, meeting new people from all over the country, taking tours of the campus, sitting in on useful and important college search information sessions, and participating in fun activities at the same time!  The Admissions staff and student team coordinates the event, while actual department heads and/or professors from all of the disciplines represented in the Saturday sessions take time out of their summer to come in and teach a mini-class or hold a workshop to showcase what you would expect if this is the major you choose in college!  You are able to pick 4 different sessions to attend on Saturday.  Parents are also encouraged to stay (at home or in a local hotel) for their own set of admissions, financial aid, and academic sessions, plus a special reception on Friday night (while the students are having even more fun of course :P)!!!  The first session is happening July 20th-21st (this Friday!) and the second is August 3rd-4th.  I know you are already dying to find out more of the specifics of the schedule and how to sign up, so you can click here…when you are done reading, of course. =]

Or, at this point you may be telling yourself- “Well, this sounds fun and all, but I already know exactly what I want to do in college and for the rest of my life…why do I need this?”  Yes, that could be you.  And you may truly end up doing exactly what you think at this very moment that you want to be doing.  But, as I recently learned through my own major switch and beginning a path to a different career, that is not always the case.  This experience allows you to sample things that you are interested in (or just sound really, really cool), and that means they can all be in one specialty if you so choose.  For example, you could pick to attend all 4 sessions in the engineering specialties, or 4 art and design sessions, or 4 science sessions, you get the idea.  This way, you can stay within what you want to focus on but still find out more about the classes you would take and the newest things in that field.  On the other hand, your session choices can range the gamut and you can go to Packaging Science and Photography in the morning, and check out Game Design and Development and Accounting in the afternoon.  The choice is yours.  This College and Careers experience also looks good on your resume no matter where you apply to college.  However, a good chunk of people who attend this program and find out what life is like on a college campus do end up applying and coming to RIT after all!

Now if you remember I said that as a Student Ambassador, this is one of the most fun weekends of my entire year.  Well yes, I like giving tours…but not that much to rank it as the best thing to do on the weekend in the summer!  This program is filled with tons of fun activities for students to partake in…beginning with a Minute-to-Win-It game show with prizes, a dance with a DJ, open swim and open gym, and last but not least (of the short list, anyway) is Zumba class!  I will be the instructor for the night and I hope you and your new friends come try out a booty-shaking, calorie burning good time!  Even if you have never done Zumba before, or don’t even have a clue what it is I am referring to, stop on in and you won’t regret it!  Here are some pictures from years past to give you some more insight into the fun to be had at College and Careers:
