Men's Hockey Recap/GRS Top 25

(December 14 2009) Written by: Matt Garver in Athletics

RIT had a non-conference game at home this past weekend against Niagara (3-10-2).  The Tigers (9-6-1) fell 3-2 against a CHA team that they should beat hands down.  It is another non-conference loss for RIT, who are still winless in non-conference play.

I really felt like the next 3 games would be a good measuring stick for the progress of the team.  This was the first one goal game win for Niagara this year as they had lost 5 games decided by one goal previously.  RIT has still not beaten Niagara in Division I play.  The Tigers need to snap that trend as Niagara will be joining the AHA after the CHA disbands following this season.

The next two games will be tougher than expected as Minnesota State took two games from GRS #2 Bemidji State, at Bemidji State.  As a result, Minnesota State enters the GRS rankings this week on the strength of those wins.  The WCHA has emerged as the national concensus strongest conference in college hockey.  They have 7 of the 10 teams in the rankings this week.  Meanwhile, RIT barely holds onto a spot in the GRS Top 25 after the loss to Niagara.
