How do I get around campus?
I’ll tell you right now... I’m a speed demon. My bicycle is an extension of myself. I like to leave five minutes before class starts and get there on time. GOTTA GO FAST.
But really, I like to bike to class. I not only enjoy it, but it saves me a lot of time going to-and-fro. If I push it, I can get to class within five minutes. Compared to walking, it really adds up. Say I go back to my apartment between each class. If it takes me 10-15 minutes each way, that can add up to an hour lost per day!
However, there are some downsides. You’re bound to finding a bike rack, if you’re walking with friends somewhere you have to walk your bike alongside you, etc. And when it gets icy and/or snowy, you need to make sure your bike is up to the task!
So, walking isn’t so bad. I left my bike back home for the winter, since I figured I wouldn’t be able to use it much (after seeing how little snow we’ve had so far, that was a mistake). Plus, I can listen to music while walking to class and not worry about not being aware of my surroundings, I can carry a coffee cup in my hand, and it makes me leave at a more responsible time.
I also experimented with skateboarding around campus. I had an old board in my garage I hadn’t touched since... well, when did Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 come out? Anyways, I tried skating around campus but found it a tad difficult. The terrain can be rough, especially for a first-time skater. I’m looking into putting longboard wheels on my skateboard so that it works better over cracks, tiles, gaps, pebbles, ice, etc.
How do I get off campus?
I think the following works best: if you’re just going somewhere like wegmans or the movie theatre, just take the bus! It’s free on weekends! If you’re going elsewhere, then find a friend with a car you can mooch off of. Speaking as a person with a car, it works.
If you can’t do that, the bus only costs a dollar if you have to switch lines. There’s always a way to get into the city!
