It's week 12, meaning that there are only a few more weeks left in the semester. Summer is just around the corner! I can't help but start planning out all the things I want to do this summer...but let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. My major – New Media Design- is a project-based major, meaning these last few weeks will be filled with projects and critiques and last minute edits.
What is New Media Design? Basically, I like to say it's a combination of graphic design, web site design, interactive design, and it helps you gain skills in both the front end and back end of digital user-interfaces.
Lately I have been working on a really fun project for my New Media Elements class. This class covers the basic elements and principles of design (kinda crossing over into graphic design). For this project, you pick a word – any noun - and then illustrate the meaning of that word using only the manipulation of the text and letters found within that word. It's a cool, simple idea that really gets you thinking.
If you are looking for a little project to work on or want some inspiration, I recommend giving this project a shot. Some people will open the dictionary, flip to a random page and blindly point at a word to challenge themselves. Ever since starting this project, I find myself looking at an object and starting to brainstorm how I might illustrate its name.
I really liked this project, so I thought I'd share it. I guess you could say playing with letters and fonts is my TYPE of project (pun intended).
Here's an example of one I was working on:
