New Student Orientation: Part 1

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year...”

Not Christmas, silly. Move-in day! That day where thousands of new RIT students come to campus and live their first day of a whole new life experience. It’s the time of year that a special group of returning students look forward to-- the group of students known as OA’s.

Being an Orientation Assistant is, in my opinion, one of the most fun and rewarding jobs on campus. It takes a special kind of person to do it, though. You have to be so full of school spirit that you bleed orange and brown. You have to be positive. You have to be flexible.

But most importantly of all, you need to be able to survive training!

OA’s move in just under a week before the freshmen. Training starts the very next day, bright and early! However, it’s not exactly boring work:


Orientation Training is fun, but also educational. We learn how to be effective leaders. We learn how to handle ethical dilemmas. We learn intricate aspects of the campus we may not have known before, and we learn how to show our New Students a fun time during Orientation itself!

Orientation Training is themed. This year, the theme was TV show genres: Fitness TV, Infomercials, Game Shows, Reality TV, Crime Dramas, Medical Dramas (yeah Team 6!), as well as others.

Themed Training? Why? Well, a good orientation requires a lot of energy, and Orientation Training helps build up spirit and energy right up until move-in day itself, so that the first face you see when you arrive at RIT is full of so much spirit and energy that you’d think they’re insane.

And frankly, we probably are:


Now where was I in this blog? Right, move-in day! All Orientation staff wake up bright and early, usually gets some team breakfast, and heads to their stations. Most teams are assigned to specific parking lots, but my team had a special, experimental assignment. Hydration!

We were tasked with keeping water jugs full and making sure everyone was hydrated. In addition, we moved around folks who had walking issues, as well as Ritchie. (Do you know how hard it is for a tiger to walk all across campus?)

After everyone’s all moved in, they head to the field house for check-in. They get their ID’s, some additional college information, and a *ton* of free swag.
