Open Door Policy
As a freshman you will be required to live in the dorms on campus. This is a great part of the college experience if you take advantage of it. One of the best things you can do is to leave your door open when you're in your room. This is the best way to make new friends on your floor. As people pass by many times they will stop in and introduce themselves. You also need to be creative with making a door stop. You could go with a brick (don’t steal one), a bent fork (works the best in my opinion), or just create something on your own.You should also take the initiative and go out in to the hall to someone's room and introduce yourself to them as well.
When I was a freshman I was the type of person who usually kept to myself. After week 2 of the fall quarter I decided to keep my door open while in my room. This let me meet other people from my floor and make a lot of friends. In doing so I also began to come out of my shell. I found other people on the floor who had similar interests as I did. A bunch of us started playing the board game Risk a lot. In the winter we actually decided to form a club centered on playing the game. We actually got a good group of people together every week. This shows that if you can’t find a club on campus that interests you, you can always form one with just a few people and a faculty member as an advisor. The club did last a while but it did begin to lose some members and fall apart a bit, but it was a lot of fun while it lasted.
I now live
in off campus in Park Point and I have to say that the thing I miss most about
the dorms is that if you didn’t have anything to do you could wander around the
hall and find someone to hang out with. For example on my floor we always tried to get the everyone to play dodgeball in the
