RIT Men's Hockey Weekend

Matt Garver on Friday, 15 February 2013. Posted in Athletics

RIT Hockey split with Robert Morris last weekend. The Tigers were shut out on Friday, Jordan Ruby was the only reason RIT was in the game. Ruby made 38 saves on Friday night and then followed it up with 35 saves, in a 4-3 RIT win, on Saturday night. This was easily the best weekend Ruby has had at RIT. Coming into RIT there was talk that he was going to be a very solid addition to the team. Thus far in his career it has not panned out that way. Perhaps this is the beginning of his talents coming to fruition.

RIT travels to Mercyhurst this weekend for a pair of critical games. Traditionally, RIT has played extremely well at Mercyhurst. With that being said, nothing about this season has been traditional. It seems to me that RIT is just not able to get everyone going at the same time. We are either not keeping the puck out of the net but scoring goals or not scoring goals and having very solid goaltending. I do believe that this team can compete with any team in Atlantic Hockey but we need to be firing on all cylinders.

RIT is still in the thick of things in Atlantic Hockey. While the season has been a disappointment with RIT in 8th place, we are only 2 points out of 4th place. The conference is a log jam from 4th to 10th place. RIT can still see 4th place with 6 games remaining in the regular season. Canisius is currently in 4th place and we have two against them to end the season. Win out and it is possible to make it to the top 4 and get a 1st round bye and never leave Rochester for the playoffs. Honestly, the way the team has played this season, that is crazy!

I am going to go with my heart again; RIT will sweep Mercyhurst. The more reasonable prediction would be Mercyhurst Friday and RIT Saturday.
