Looking for a new experience at RIT? Want to learn about a new culture, try out new foods, or even learn new styles of music?? Check out RIT's Caribbean Student Association (CSA)! Since the 1980's, RIT's CSA has provided students with an inside look in the Caribbean culture. With events such as their "Caribash" & "Date Auction" in the winter, annual Carnival & "Taste of the Caribbean" dinner in the spring, this club brings the Caribbean experience to RIT and the Rochester community, full fledged.

Caribbean Culture

CSA educates its members about the different lifestyles of the Caribbean islands and also show the similarities and differences to that of what we experience here in the States. A few meeting topics range from stereotypes and myths about Caribbean people, mannerisms and values, popular games, fun events, or even issues in the RIT community.

At their signature event, "Taste of the Caribbean",CSA showcases the Caribbean culture through a display of authentic foods from different islands such as jerk-chicken, curry-goat, roti, jonny cake, and Puerto Rican pastelon (can you say "Samples!?"), a virtual tour of different vacation spots in the Caribbean (some of which the club has visited), and accomplishments in previous years.

According to the former president, Keshawn King, "A common misconception is that reggae is the only genre from the Caribbean islands. In reality, Reggae originated from Jamaica, from which dancehall (a newer more upbeat genre) was derived. In addition, Spanish speaking countries such as the Dominican Republic & Puerto Rico contribute Reggaeton, Bachata, Salsa, Merengue."

Want to learn more? Come to one of their meetings this fall. For more information, check out the links below. Stay Blessed and remember, You do not have to be from the Caribbean Islands to join the club!
