Snowshoe trip in the 'dacks

Kahle Toothill on Monday, 20 February 2006.

So this weekend I spent snowshoeing in the Adirondack mountains near Lake Placid, NY. We stayed at the Mountain Brook Lodge at the base of Whiteface Mountain, where the Olympic skiiers competed. The owners of the lodge were so nice and friendly. They had really cool dogs too that they let us play with during breakfast. There were 10 of us in all taking this class for credit. We had such a great time in the car ride, just road trippin' it through the state. There were so many inside jokes and great memories made even before we stepped out of the van. So Saturday morning we got up super early and traveled to the trail head, owned by ADK. On our way there we saw the Olympic ski jump... it was amazing to see how high up it was!

The trail head is a popular one, since it's the closest starting point if you want to hike to Mount Marcy, the highest peak in the Adirondacks. There were so many people with backbags as big as them on.. they were camping out for a few nites in the mountains. It was 0 degrees outside, not even counting the wind chill. No joke. And it got colder and colder since we climed a total of 1700 feet in elevation. As long as we kept moving, we stayed warm, but if we stopped for 5 minutes, we all got frozen and had to keep moving. After about 4 miles of hiking, we got to our destination - Avalanche Lake. Before we could even go on it, we had to layer up with everything we had since it was a good -20 or -30 on the lake. I took as many pictures as I could before the batteries in my camera died because of the cold. The Lake was amazing. It was worth all the pain and uphill climbs to get there. We could only stay for a few minutes because of the severity of the cold, but it was breathtaking. Here's a picture:

So after we turned back, it was a little over 4 miles to get back to the trail head. We were tired and hungry after hiking 8.5 miles in the snow, but we had such a great experience. We took a trip into Lake Placid to visit a gear shop and drove through the Olympic town and saw the hockey area and other venues. It's such a beautiful town. I want to go back and spend more time there. After we left Lake Placid, we went back to the lodge and took long hot showers, relaxed for a bit and then went out to dinner. After we stuffed our empty stomachs, we went back to the lodge and just hung out. It was so much fun. A few of the boys took a special trip to the gas station for some frosty beverages. haha. I ended up falling asleep around 11:30 since I was so beat. It was sad leaving the next morning. Al, the owner, took our picture outside of the lodge. His wife, Alicia got in the picture too. I made so many new friends this weekend. Everyone was awesome and I had the time of my life. Props to Seann, our instructor for doing such an awesome job too. The trip was one of the most difficult things I've ever done in my life and there were points were I didn't think I'd make it... I'm so glad I went and that I have these memories to hole on to for the rest of my life.
