The Year With Nothing After: Senior Year Week 1

Unlike all other years of schooling, this is the first year where I’m not really sure what is going to happen next. Ideas & hopes, sure but definite answer: No clue!

Senior year in design is heavily about making a portfolio that is tailored towards what we’re looking to do after school. Some kids are focused on getting into big named advertising agencies, while others hope to work for specific companies or design firms throughout the country.

Pretty much the options are endless when it comes to design. Corporate design (which is working for a company like Target doing their design), Advertising Design, Design Firms (which tend to work with many different places doing everything from collateral to websites and animation), Publication Design (for magazines or newspapers) or Freelance Design.

One of my classes this quarter is Portfolio Development with one of my favorite professors so far. Seriously, the guy just exudes energy into design & is 100% into making us better designers. Not to say that I haven’t had other good experiences with professors but he’s one of the first ones that seems totally plugged into design places around, still communications with past graphic design majors & constantly pushes us. Our project for the quarter is to completely brand & design a product or line of items. This week we’re focusing on writing a project brief & sketching out design ideas to be presented next Monday.

Another one of the classes I'm taking is Advanced Website Design, which is pretty self-explanatory. This is the third web class that I've taken so far. Clearly the industry is leaning more towards online publications & design (not to say that print is gone) but it's important to at least understand the basics of how a website is coded & created. 

As far as what direction I’m planning on taking my career, I’ve been looking at (ie. stalking) companies like IDEO which does a lot of really innovative design that goes above and beyond just branding something. They will go into a location for a client & research before coming up with a solution so it’s a bigger emphasis on brainstorming & innovative thinking.

But who knows! I could change my mind a billion times before then.
