Working on Campus

Haley Blanchette on Sunday, 21 August 2011.

Working on campus is really convenient because you can walk to work and go before or after classes.  On-campus employers usually are very understanding about your class schedule.  I also have a job at Artesano Bakery and Café located in Monroe Hall.  My bosses are always understanding if I need to rearrange my schedule due to projects and they always make sure students leave work early enough to get to classes on time.  They understand that our first priority at RIT is class.  Off-campus employers may not have this same understanding.

Working on campus is a great way to make some extra cash.  You are limited to about 20 hours per week because you are a full time student.  I waited until my second year at college to get a job on campus but I wish I had applied sooner.  I knew it would be too hard for me to have a job fall quarter of my first year but I could have tried winter or spring.

Balancing work and class is tough but it’s definitely worth it if you can keep your grades up and make it to work on time.

If you want to have an on-campus job at RIT, you can start searching now with On-Campus Job Postings: This is found on RIT’s Student Employment Office website.  A lot of the departments at RIT have job openings relatively often.  The most popular places for students to find work are: dining services, NTID notetaking, Wallace Library, and Maintenance.

Once you receive a job offer, you should fill out an Employment Verification Form ( and you need to go to the Student Employment Office in the University Services Center to receive your Employment Eligibility Card.  Don’t forget to bring some official documents with you to prove your identity.  A list of acceptable items can be found here:

You must be registered for at least 12 credit hours before you can apply for the SEO Employment Eligibility Card.

Once you start working, you will receive bi-weekly pay checks and you can sign up for direct deposit.  Once you get here, you can get a direct deposit form at the Student Employment Office or the Payroll Office located on the first floor of the George Eastman Building.
