So, one of the biggest and best parts of an RIT education is co-op.
For those of you not familiar: keep reading; RIT students: skip this paragraph
I figure that maybe I should explain co-oping a little bit. First of all, co-op stands for cooperative education. Many majors at RIT require that you complete at least one co-op. This means that for at least 1 quarter of your college career, you are not on campus, paying tuition or taking classes. For those quarters you are...a big kid, I guess. By big kid, I mean a grown up haha. For those quarters, you are at a real job, getting paid for the work that you do. This isn't like your summer job at Salvatore's (which is the local pizza place in Rochester.....but that's a whole other blog), If you want more info on co-op visit www.rit.edu/co-op/careers.
So, why do I care so much about co-op? Because I am going to be leaving the great city of Rochester, NY this fall to complete my 2 co-op requirements for my major (Graphic Media). In about 4 weeks I'm going to pack up my car and drive 6 hours to North Providence, Rhode Island. This is where my apartment is located. My job is with Hasbro Toys in Pawtucket, RI. So, I will be spending the next 6 months (Labor Day - March 2nd) working with the packaging for their toys. Basically, shipping proofs overseas, checking the colors, etc....yea yea, I'm a print geek - I know.
The other great thing about this co-op is how close it is to Boston. Don't get me wrong, Providence is beautiful and full of things to do, but Boston is like the mother of all cities...next to the Big Apple. And the other great thing is that my best friend just moved to Boston. So, the next 6 months is going to be spent in the big city with the best person on the planet , working a real job, basically living as any real adult (that is not a college student) would. All in all, I am pretty amped.
If anyone is going to be in the Boston/Providence area, come visit!! And lastly, does anyone have any advice for me during this obviously trying and stressful time in my life? like....buying enough clothes to last me 6 months so I don't need to do laundry.....
Stay tuned for Rhode Island pictures from my visit last month and also for more blogs about my adventures in packing.....yikeeees.
