Basant 2013

To celebrate spring, OASIS (Organization for the Alliance of Students from the Indian Subcontinent) brought Basant to the Ingle Auditorium. Basant is a traditional spring celebration, and OASIS’s event showcased Indian culture through dance, musical performances, and even food.

The first half of the show featured traditional Indian music and dances. Parindey opened up the show with a few songs and chances for the audience to sing along. They were followed by a few dance acts from classical Kathak (a dance form originating from India) to upbeat RIT Bhangra. To finish up the first half of the show, Bollywood in the Dark harnessed the power of blacklight to intensify the visuals of their dance and President Destler himself found his way to the stage for a samosa eating competition, which he won!

After a brief intermission (where they sold samosas, of course), the show shifted gears from traditional to Bollywood. 2013 marks the 100th year of Bollywood film production, and the show paid homage to the industry through theatrical performances and music from Bollywood films. Bollywood Stars, UB ZEAL (South Asian Fusion Dance Team from University of Buffalo), JHAKAAS, and the OASIS E-board completed the show.

To round off the night, the audience and performers ate dinner catered by Haveli.
