Now going into my senior year, and living in the residence halls for 3 out of those 4 years, I think I’ve learned a thing or two about dorm life. Being on both sides as a resident and then as an RA, I think I can safely say that I’m in some kind of club. Coming into a community living space such as dorms can be extremely scary your first time, just like any new experience. Many students have never left their hometowns or been disconnected from their families for such a long period of time. Needless to say, almost every new resident feels this way. I am not ashamed to say I was upset for a couple days after my parents dropped me off at RIT.
That’s the beauty of it though, to remember it happens to everyone and that you are not alone. My advice, jump into college life. If you sit in your room and stay sad and upset, then you are not going to get any better. It makes people anxious to get involved and meet new people, but guess what? They are just as anxious and just as nervous to meet you! Once the awkward hello and how ya doings are done, then it’s time to have fun! You’ll have so many programs and floor-mates at your disposal to socialize and have a great time, that you’ll forget you were every homesick to begin with! I promise you this, if you take advantage of dorm life and use every moment to it’s fullest, you are going to miss the dorms when you move onto apartments.
In that case, Residence Life is always hiring!!
