Dream Big: RIT Convocation

(September 05 2011) Written by: Alissa Anderson in Academic Calendar, Advising & Support, Alumni, Life After RIT, Orientation, Student Life, Women at RIT

Last week students were welcomed to campus during the traditional “RIT Tiger Walk” and Convocation ceremonies. The Tiger Walk consists of a walking progression of new students from the residence halls to the Gordon Field House. As the students walk the path, they are surrounded by a cheering crowd of families, upperclassmen, alumni, and RIT Faculty and Staff. Following the Tiger Walk, Convocation ceremony professionally welcomes students with speeches by administrators and campus student leaders.

This year Student Government President Greg Pollack discussed the 2011 Orientation theme “Dream Big.” Greg reflected on his past three years as an RIT student and all that he has accomplished, and more importantly what the RIT community has achieved. He reminds the students that college is their opportunity to grow, to dream, and to do things they would have never imagined. He noted that with everything you do on campus, you have the support of your fellow peers and faculty to make your dream a reality.

I can say that Gregs’ message spoke to more students in the crowd then just the first year freshmen. As a fourth year student I can attest that anything is possible on the RIT campus. As a member of the RIT community your ability to #DreamBig is an open door. I have seen students take on world records (Phi Kappa Psi and the Dodgeball world record), RIT athletes compete to the top ranks of college hockey (final four 2010), I have watched my first year classmates climb the ranks in student organizations and land coops with huge name companies (Apple, Google, NASA, etc) – companies that seemed untouchable four years ago.

The RIT campus is a dynamic system and constantly changing with new opportunities at every corner. My advice to the 2,500+ incoming students it to take the next four years and apply yourself, challenge yourself to #DreamBig, and leave your mark on RIT.

#DreamingBigSince2008,

Ali
