From RIT to the Super Bowl.

(February 12 2008) Written by: Kahle Toothill in Athletics

It's true. Tom Coughlin, the head couch of the Superbowl XLII Champion NY Giants once coached RIT's football team. Presently, RIT does not have a football team (surprise! to all those who assumed we did). In fact, we haven't had a team since 1976 - hence the "RIT Football. Undefeated since 1976" t-shirts and sweatshirts visible around campus. I rememeber coming to RIT for an open house during my junior year in highschool when I first spotted these shirts. There is a club that is always around selling them as a fundraiser during busier times on campus: such as open houses. Needless to say, I purchased(read: my parents purchased) one of these hoodies for me during out visit and I still wear it all the time to this day.

Coughlin’s RIT connection made national news in the week leading up to the Super Bowl. It was featured in newspapers such as The New York Times, Newsday and Chicago Tribune. Some of his former players from RIT held a reunion. Word of this reunion made way to Coughlin and despite hundreds of other media requests, he responded to this one. No surprise that RIT and the connections made here hold a special place in people's hearts.

Here in this picture, Coughlin is sporting a commemorative T-shirt created for a Feb. 3 reunion of Tigers teammates who played under him, Coughlin holds the Vince Lombardi trophy:
