Gym Daze

Clarissa Baston on Thursday, 26 February 2009. Posted in Athletics, Student Life

It is almost common knowledge that Americans are not exactly the skinniest of people.  And being in college doesn't really help that either.  All incoming student dread the "freshmen 15" and always vow to avoid it at all costs when beginning college.  I know for me, one of the selling points for RIT was the awesome fitness and student life center.  When I went for a tour, I thought to myself, "Wow...I have to work out now!"

Then move-in day came along...then the first quarter...then the end of freshmen year...  Yeah I didn't go to the gym even once.  But I figured walking down the quarter mile a couple times will keep me fit.  And it did for the most part.  However, I wasn't exactly on the healthiest of diets.  My roommate and a couple of my friends had cars...which isn't a very good thing because we ended up going to fast food joints any time we wanted.  I remember my roommate and I watching TV and a KFC commerical came on and as soon it was over, we rushed to her car and went off.

I ordered a 6 person family meal...and ate it....in one sitting.  It was not a pretty sight.  The worst part is that this wasn't the only time...It happend several times.  So much so, that the people at KFC knew who I was and people on my floor knew me as the little girl who can eat a lot of KFC!!!  There's video of my eating my meal on the floor with all the food spralled out around me, but there's no need to go there...

Anyways...when I went home that summer, I weighed myself and I had gained 20 pounds!  I was so ashamed.  My family even noticed and they are the kind of people who say what they think.  So by my second year, I decided that I would try my best to work out.  I had to...to get back into my jeans. (I had gone up 5 pant sizes.)

I went with my boyfriend and we worked out for an hour.  I realized how out of shape I was cuz my legs could barely hold my body up.  So I kept going and I getting into the swing of things.  But then something totally weird happend...I got the CHICKEN POX!  It was probably the worst thing ever.  Usually, you get it when you're little and you don't remember having it.  But I was 19 and I wasn't even allowed on campus!  It was awful.  It was a major setback.

What's even worse is that I haven't gone to the gym ever since...Well ever since a couple weeks ago.  So far I've gone about 5 times in the past 2 weeks, which is pretty good in my book.  I plan to go again before I head home for break.

I guess my advice for keeping a healthy lifestyle are:
-take advantage of the facilities on campus.  They are amazing.
-have a workout buddy, it's always more fun that way
-check out the healthy options in the dining halls
-DO NOT GO TO KFC!!!

What wellness courses did you take? My favorite as a student was kickboxing. The instructor was awesome! I still see him at the gym when I go for Pilates or Boot Camp this quarter.

And have you used the bikes with the video monitors? I think my favorite course is the one where you ride by the water.

Technically, I haven't taken a wellness class yet, but I'm planning to take a stress management class in the spring. I also want to take core glutes and abs or volleyball.

I tried to use the bikes with the monitors, but I have really bad motion sickness so I got really dizzy really quickly! I can't even play most video games or watch documentaries because of the camera moving so much! It's awful! lol :P

Add don't get chicken pox to your list of things not to do to keep a healthy life style.

Every time I give a tour and go in the SLC I say "I should really try this thing..."

I took Turbo Kick in the fall. That was quite a workout. I didn't lose pounds so much but what I gained was muscle.

haha that KFC story is priceless. You should take core glutes and abs.. best class ever. It's taught by this older lady who I thought was going to take it real easy on us. Guess again! She kicked my butt twice a week all quarter and I definitely lost those extra freshman pounds.
