Hey, I'm Out of State!

There's sometimes a misconception that the RIT student body is mostly comprised of in-state students from NY. However, 51% of our students come from out-of-state, and we even have 2,000 international students as well! As an out-of-state student from Virginia, this was really comforting to discover when I was a freshman. Coming from a state about 6-7 hours away and going to the same school for 12 years (yes, literally the same school from 1st grade through high school), I was really scared to basically start over. I knew absolutely no one at RIT, and RIT wasn't even a well-known school from my area in Virginia. When I told people I was attending a school called Rochester Institute of Technology, I always had to explain it was a tech school in Upstate New York, kind of close to Canada (and then I always got the same response of "Oh, it must be cold there!"). But for all of you fellow out-of-staters who will be starting over like I did, I just want you to know it'll be okay!

Not knowing anyone was scary at first. But immediately you'll discover that everyone is kind of in the same boat as you. Sure, some people may have a couple of friends already, but generally everyone is friendless coming into college. And everyone wants to make friends, so it's pretty easy! Something I learned my first couple of weeks at college back in freshman year is to keep your dorm room door open. It's a great way to meet your fellow floormates and establish a friendly atmosphere! Also, get involved! Checking out some clubs and other activities on campus exposes you to different groups of people to help meet new friends. Step out of your comfort zone and put yourself out there! Because I can guarantee you, everyone else wants to make friends too.

So to all of you coming from out-of-state, welcome! Always glad to meet a fellow RIT out-of-stater! And don't worry, you'll be just fine here. :)
