High school confusion to college confidence!

(January 11 2014) Written by: Lizz Sawyer

In high school I loved my photography classes, my gym classes and study hall...So to say the least, when it came to preparing for college, I was not too enthused.  Until one day I walked out of my photo class and saw a poster about graphic design, I had NO idea what this was. (non art majors.. stay with me here)  Up until that point I had barely even researched majors.  This poster got me interested but also nervous.  I had not taken drawing, or painting nor did my high school offer animation or graphics. But I was interested and decided to choose this major. I did so many college tours including RIT.  When I went through the buildings at RIT, I was so inspired and amazed.  I didn't think that my small art class in high school could lead to such professional careers and broad options.   The point to this is: nerves are normal and good!  If you never got nervous you would never challenge yourself.  In high school I was so nervous that I would not be able to compete with others coming here.  I didn't have much training or experience, while others that were applying had amazing portfolios and talent. But you are capable of much more than you think.   I just finished up a big graphic design project and have a 4D final coming up, I am so excited!  For graphic design we had to create a graphic translation in illustrator and incorporate text.  We had to show our process work and make multiple translations, and in the end create two posters with color, text and the translation. I loved my final results!  No way did little me back in high school believe that I could create art work like this.  So to all of you who are nervous, or not confident- just be excited.  Passion will take you a lot further.  In 4D we are working in After Effects and Premier.  Our final is all about translations- audio, visual, and conceptual. Most professors here at RIT are very open and let students create their own concepts.  They work with us and enhance our thinking.  I really love my classes this semester and I'm so excited to keep learning about this all!
