Ohh Registration

I’ve never woken up so early in college other than for freshman registration day. 5:50 am, bright and early, for the 6 am registration. Sounds like fun, right? Well, to be honest, it’s not. However, once you have all of your classes, it’s a really relieving and you feel pretty accomplished. If you happen to not get a class you need, you can also file for ‘Unmet Needs’ and academic support will work with you and the school to get the class you need. Then you can go the rest of the day thinking “Yea, I did work today.”

Back tracking all the way to fall quarter, something RIT does for freshman for their first quarter is sign you up for your classes for you. You may be thinking “That’s crazy!” or “What if they sign me up for classes I don’t want?”, well at least those were the questions I first thought back last summer before my first quarter here. RIT will sign you up for all of the classes you need for the major you are going into. That means, you are signed up for all of your cores and the liberal art classes you need, along with the freshman Discovery class, which is like a freshman enrichment class to introduce you to college life and resources around campus.

Every freshman is also given a freshman academic advisor, who you can go to with any questions at all. I got to know my advisor even before school started because I wanted to switch out of my liberal arts class I got assigned to. Advisers are easily accessible, only an email or phone call away, and are always willing to help and answer your questions. And if there is a problem with your schedule, your advisor will work with you to get everything sorted out and the classes you need.

Thankfully, my classes for next quarter seem pretty fun and I’m excited for them. Elements of Graphic Design for New Media and Time-Based Imaging are the two classes I’m most excited to take next quarter. However, I’m going to miss my Intro to Computer Imaging, Digital Video Multimedia, and 2D Design classes from this quarter.

Freshman registration day is approaching (February 2nd!), so on that morning, you’ll know where the RIT freshman will be (that is, those with still first year status, some freshman get second year status by having extra credits). We’ll all be anxiously sitting in front of our computers at 6 in the morning, ready to get work done.
