RIT Hockey split a home series against Bentley last weekend at the Ritter Arena. Bentley won Friday night 3-0, with RIT rebounding on Saturday night with a 4-0 win. I went with a RIT sweep last week because I thought RIT would seize an opportunity to make a jump in the standings. They did not take advantage of the opportunity, thus RIT remains very close to the cellar of Atlantic Hockey.
RIT is currently in 10th place in the conference with a record of 4-6-3. Their overall record is 6-10-4 and I don’t see it improving as the season winds down. RIT has one of the most difficult schedules in Atlantic Hockey as we close the 2012-2013 season. This weekend RIT travels to Army for a pair on the road. Army is currently sitting in 2nd place in conference with a 7-5-3 record. Talent-wise I think RIT is a better team but that means nothing in hockey.
Army will give maximum effort for 60 minutes, whistle to whistle, and even after the whistle when needed. They are cadets and they play a tough brand of hockey. I would not call this RIT Hockey team a tough team. We have seen the effort from this team disappear for minutes, periods and even games this season. I think the games will be close this weekend but ultimately Army will want these wins more and sweep RIT.
On another topic, the University of Alabama-Huntsville was granted acceptance into the WCHA, starting in the 2013-2014 season. The WCHA and CCHA have been dismantled because of college hockey realignment. The WCHA are losing Minnesota and Wisconsin to the Big Ten conference and then five more members to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. The WCHA will then pick up five members from the CCHA, which is also losing members to the Big Ten conference. The CCHA is dissolving as a result of the musical conference chairs in college hockey. With the addition of Alabama-Huntsville and the five members from the CCHA, the WCHA will be a 10 team conference. I am glad that cooler heads prevailed and UAH was able to keep its hockey program and find a home in the WCHA.
