RIT Men's Hockey Weekend

Matt Garver on Friday, 25 January 2013. Posted in Athletics

RIT Hockey took to the road last weekend, heading to West Point for two against Army. The Tigers were able to capture their second sweep of the year, both coming on the road. I completely missed on my prediction last weekend as I had an Army sweep. I am happy to miss my prediction for two huge RIT wins. The good news, the sweep puts RIT right in the middle of the pack in Atlantic Hockey. The bad news is that RIT has a home and home with Niagara University this weekend.

Niagara is 13-1-1 in conference play and is leading the Atlantic Conference. RIT has played Niagara once this year and they tied. The all-time Division 1 series has Niagara with a huge advantage over RIT at 7-1-5. RIT has never beat Niagara at Dwyer Arena. Niagara’s goalie, Carsen Chubak, is third in the country with a 1.58 GAA. RIT does not have a goalie in the top 35 in the country.

RIT has been very solid over the last 9 games with a record of 6-2-1. I would call that turning the corner. I do believe that this team has improved quite a bit over the season and Josh Watson has emerged as the number one goalie for the team. Unfortunately, RIT is running into a juggernaut in 17th ranked Niagara University. The Purple Eagles are the only ranked team in the Atlantic Conference.

Earlier in the week I felt like I was going to take RIT in an upset sweep of Niagara this weekend. RIT is on a roll right now and it feels like they could crank out a string of wins. Then I came to my senses after looking at the Niagara goalie and his stats. The all-time series record for RIT against Niagara is not good at all. I am going with a tie tonight at Ritter Arena and a Niagara win tomorrow night.

LAST WEEK’S PREDICTION RECORD: 0-2 (.000)

THIS WEEK’S PREDICTION:

RIT and NU tie Friday night

Niagara wins Saturday night

SEASON PREDICTION RECORD: 8-8-4 (.500)
