RIT Men's Hockey Weekend

Matt Garver on Friday, 08 February 2013. Posted in Athletics

Last weekend I went with RIT sweeping UConn. RIT lost Friday night at Ritter Arena, but came back strong on Saturday night and blew out UConn 7-1. Matt Grogan, goalie for UConn, won on Friday night but the UConn coaching staff went with Bartus on Saturday night. They are both senior goalies so it is a tough position but this time of year is not for the faint of heart. In my opinion, this was a big coaching error; the staff should have gone back to Grogan. If you have a hot goalie this time of year, you ride him till he can’t stand up anymore.

Jordan Ruby got the start both nights for RIT instead of Josh Watson. Watson had a rough go of it against Niagara the previous weekend so RIT went back to Jordan Ruby. Ruby was able to get the win Saturday night in a must win. I am hopeful that this will give him some confidence and he will emerge as the goalie he was touted as when he came to RIT. Honestly, RIT has been playing much better hockey in the last 10 games or so, but the play between the pipes has been spotty at best. If we can get one of those goalies hot, RIT can make up ground in the Atlantic Hockey standings. RIT needs to go 6-2 to close the season if they have hopes of some home playoff hockey.

Former RIT standout Chris Tanev became the first former RIT Hockey player to score a goal in the NHL. I have attached the video of his game winning goal in overtime against the Edmonton Oilers. Tanev has played in all 10 games this season for the Vancouver Canucks. He has 2 points on a goal and an assist and is a +4 rating. Tanev has offensive skills; he scored some huge goals for RIT in his lone season as a Tiger. Tanev was part of the team that went all the way to the Frozen Four after they shocked Denver and New Hampshire in the NCAA Regionals. That magical season ended with a loss to Wisconsin in the NCAA semifinals. That season was easily the best for RIT at the Division 1 level.

RIT Hockey has headed south for a pair against Robert Morris this weekend. They have to sweep this weekend. Splits will do nothing for RIT right now; they need to make ground in the standings. I have Jordan Ruby in net both nights, putting on his best performance since coming to RIT. I think RIT will head down to Pittsburgh, Ruby will play out of his mind and RIT sweeps Robert Morris.
