These past few days, Student Government has been sponsoring the "Real RIT Dorm Challenge". This program was designed to immerse RIT administration into everyday student life of an RIT student.
Twenty administrators said that they would participate requiring them to live in the dorms with a RIT student(s), eat at the student dining hall, Gracie's, go to work and spend as much time with your floor mates as possible. We even had to park our cars in the designated student parking lots and walk to classes each day...just like a student would do. Oh, did I mention that we needed to use the showers in the residence halls and follow all of the rules!
So, I was asked to participate as one of the administrators in this challenge. It has been a great experience to spend time with my new floormates for 3 days. Things have certainly changed since I lived in residence halls. The students here at RIT have been great hosts. They have been eating dinner with me and giving me the scoop on what it is like to live at RIT. I am amazed how open they have been with me. Of course not everything is going to be perfect. I am hoping to bring back some suggestions about how things may be tweaked to offer some new options to our students.
My favorite part is when everyone comes back from class. Most everyone leaves their doors open which really reinforces a sense of community. People just drop by to say hi and help each other with projects and assignments. Folks like to eat dinner together so I have been very thankfult be included. Dinner has been fun and they have told me some pretty funny stories!
If you have any questions about my experience, please let me know. This is the last night of the dorm challenge...it should be fun
