I know that the one thing I never want to do again is go through the college search process. There was too much stress and to many life changing decisions. As the oldest child in my family I was also the first one to experiment and figure out how it was all done. There are a lot of things that I would have done differently but in all I think I made the right choice no matter how hard it was.
In my senior year of high school I was visiting my advisor at least once a week by the time November came around. It was almost like adding on another class. I would stop in the office for a little while have a quick talk about how I wanted my life to look in the next 10 years and then she would hand me a list of schools to look at. So I would go home and have to do research, make tons of lists and hope that I could fit in to at least one.
I think my main problem was that I didn’t know what I wanted in a school, or where I wanted to be. So my first tip would be to visit the schools before you apply. I think it would help you narrow down questions like the size of school, what the town/city is like, and even give you a sense of the atmosphere that the school has. I think if I knew what size campus I wanted it would have knocked off maybe 3 schools on my list. Also I wasn’t able to even visit schools until after I applied, I was just too busy. I think either way everything will work out, but it will make the process easier if you know as much as you can about the schools you are looking at. And just so you know my final list consisted of ten schools which may or not be normal. I don’t think it really matters how many schools you apply to but just keep in mind that most of them cost money to send in your application. I want to say on average each school that I applied to cost around $50 but it really depends on the school.
So by December I had a list of schools that I was really interested in and I was ready to narrow things down and just apply. Because I am so indecisive that didn’t really happen I maybe dropped two schools from my list. So I think the best thing you can do is make a list. Write down the city, cost, average temperature (sounds useless but its important), size, whether or not it’s a reach school and a quick though that you have about the school. Then the best thing to do is make sure all the schools are in your price range. This might not be a problem for some but I know that if there was one thing that my parents and I didn’t agree on it was money and how much they were willing to pay for school. Then I think the best thing to do is rank them in order of love. If you can, narrow it down to around 5-8 schools it will help ensure you get into at least one of your schools (also this is different for everyone). Make sure this list contains at least one easy school, one reach school and then your favorites.
I hope this is a helpfull topic to discuss. I promise my future post wont be so blan haha but I think its an important. p.s In my next blog I will be posting pictures of my room and floor to give an idea about what its like to live in the doorms
