Step 2—Filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Currently enrolled RIT students need to reapply for financial aid each year. The financial aid award year begins with the summer term and ends with the spring term. Filing your FAFSA is the most important step in the financial aid process. By submitting your FAFSA, you will automatically be considered for all federal and institutional aid programs. You may file this form electronically at The information you provide will be used to calculate your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The EFC is used to determine your eligibility for federal student aid. After you file your FAFSA, the federal processor will send your information to all colleges that you have listed. The federal school code for Rochester Institute of Technology is 002806.

Please note that in order to be eligible to receive federal student aid, you must meet all of the following criteria:

All your financial aid applications must be submitted no later than April 1st. While not required, families should make every effort to complete their federal tax returns prior to filing their financial aid applications since this will simplify the process. If families are unable to complete their tax returns prior to filing, estimated figures can be used; although, families should make any appropriate adjustments if the income information is different.
