Alumni Virtual Job Search Intensive Program

Welcome! 

This five-week program will provide information, resources, guidance and support for your job search.  Each week we will focus on different key areas of the job search process, and add new materials to this site, including webinars, supporting materials, examples, and suggested assignments to advance your job search.  This program is completely online, so you can participate around your schedule.  If at any time you have questions, or would like to discuss your individual search in more detail, please contact Kris Stehler, Assistant Director, Alumni Relations, by email, or phone at 585.475.5468.

Week 1 - Overview & Job Zone System

Welcome to the program:  a brief introduction to the program, including goals, schedule and format.

Career services and programs:  an overview of the services and resources available to alumni by the RIT Office of Career Services.  Whether you’re a recent graduate, or have been away from RIT for a while, we have resources that will help in your job search.

Website and Job Zone:  a detailed walk-through of our career services website, including how to utilize the Job Zone system for your search.  Even if you’re familiar with Job Zone, be sure your profile is updated and complete, and that you’re using all its features and resources.

This week, I’d also like to encourage you to begin utilizing our Experts Webinar Series.  Once you register, you have access to archived webinars on a wide variety of job search and career topics, including those from this week.  Just search the archives for the topics on which you’d like more information, and you’ll get a wealth of perspectives and resources from national career experts.  Of course you can join upcoming webinars live as well!

Suggested Assignments:

  • Develop your personal brand statement
  • Review and revise your resume as necessary, incorporating your brand and targeting to your industry or field
  • Create other marketing materials:  cover letter, business card, portfolio, elevator pitch
    • Research your targeted industry; what other marketing materials can you develop?
  • Develop or review your LinkedIn profile; is it as strong and complete as possible?
  • Consider developing  Twitter and professional Facebook profiles

Week 3 - Job Search Strategy

Job Search Strategy:  This webinar provides a detailed plan for a focused job search, to help ensure you’re doing everything possible to be successful in your search.

  • Determine your optimal job search organization tool and begin to fill it in with your search activities
  • Once you have determined your targeted field and position(s), do a gap analysis to see if you’re ready to apply
  • Develop a marketing plan to reach your targeted companies
  • Begin researching the resources outlined in the presentation, and see what others might be available for your targeted field/industry

Week 4 - Networking

Networking:  This webinar provides information on the what, why, who and how of networking.

  • Find LinkedIn people to connect and conduct informational interviews with, and groups to join
  • Join a professional association; connect with members for networking
  • Find RIT Alumni to connect with, through LinkedIn, and the RIT Alumni Online Community (Tiger Locator)
  • Polish your elevator pitch/60 second commercial – do you have several versions for different networking situations?
  • Other networking opportunities for your field?

Week 5 - Interviewing & Next Steps

Interviewing:  Gain information and tips to help you prepare for interviewing success.  This webinar focuses on the types of interviews you may encounter, preparation tips, and advice for answering difficult questions.
