Art Education (Visual Art-all grades) MST

Program Overview

The MST in art education (visual art-all grades) leads to initial/professional New York state certification in visual arts for grades K through 12. This certification allows applicants to teach in New York state public schools. The program features pedagogical studies, studio inquiry, and student teaching. The program prepares students to meet the national, state, and regional need for teachers of the visual arts and is designed for accomplished art educators and advocates for art and learning in all grades. The program is nationally accredited and is for teachers in art education who hold a BFA or BA (art major) degree. Classes begin each September and conclude in May. Graduates of teacher education programs at RIT have a 96 percent pass rate on the NY State Teacher Certification examinations.

Nature of Work

Art teachers help students appreciate art by introducing them to art materials and techniques, discussing art history, showing films and slides, taking class trips to museums and galleries, and assigning art projects.  They track student progress and grade projects.  Depending on the school structure, they may have homeroom and study hall duties as well as oversee class trips.  They may work closely with assistant and/or student teachers.  They create course outlines, curricula, and lesson plans.  They attend teacher meetings and conferences.

Training / Qualifications

Art Teachers who work in public schools must have a four-year degree.  They must also complete an approved teacher education program and be licensed.  Depending on the state, once they secure a teaching position, teachers may then be required to receive their master’s degree in education within five years.   Art teachers also need to have supervised practice teaching experience.

Job Outlook

Employment opportunities for Art Teachers vary depending on geographic location.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment growth for elementary, middle and high school teachers is expected to be faster in the South and West than in the Midwest and Northeast. Employment of elementary and middle school teachers is projected to grow 12 percent from 2012 to 2022, about as fast as the average for all occupations.  Employment of high school teachers is projected to grow 6 percent from 2012 to 2022, slower than the average for all occupations.

Significant Points

  • Art Teachers must be able to connect with and engage their students. Public school teachers may work with larger class sizes (up to 30 or more students per class).
  • To successfully educate and manage so many students, it is critical that art teachers have a vast supply of patience, empathy, diligence, and focus.
  • They must stay in touch with what interests their students in order to create excitement about art projects. Art teachers work with diverse individuals with diverse needs.
  • They are responsible not only for educating and guiding their students to hone and improve artistic skills, but also for meeting administrative obligations and maintaining contact with parents.
  • Art teachers with strong communication and interpersonal skills who are able to maintain the required paperwork and met deadlines will fare best.
