Database Administration

Program Overview

The advanced certificate program in database administration provides students with the knowledge and expertise needed to seek or further careers in database administration. Graduates will be able to discuss and develop policies, procedures, and standards needed to manage data in a diverse organization. The certificate is composed of four (4) courses that are designed to provide the knowledge necessary to create, deploy and manage databases using major commercial database management systems (DBMS).

Admission Requirements

  • Fulfill general criteria for graduate admission;
  • Successful completion of a baccalaureate degree at a regionally accredited college or university;
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 in undergraduate work. Applicants with a GPA that is less than 3.0 may be considered, but may be required to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE);
  • Other factors may be considered in the admission process such as strong employment history, especially in database management or administration or application development.

    Prerequisites
    Students must satisfy the following prerequisites of the program before matriculating:

    • Intermediate-level knowledge of programming in a high-level object-oriented programming language such as Java, C++, or C* - equivalent to at least one year of study;
    • One topic from Fundamentals of Database Client Server Architecture (4002-784) is required for Database Performance and Tuning, but permission of the instructor may be granted for this requirement.

    Bridge program
    The following set of courses are offered at RIT as a bridge to this program for students lacking in the prerequisite areas:

    Programming

  • 4002-217 and 4002-218 Introduction to Programming I and II; or
  • 4002-414/714 Java for Programmers
