Managing Your Career at RIT: Putting your Best TIGER PAW Forward

This exciting series of workshops is the right fit for you if you are interested in a stronger contribution to student success by progressing in your career at RIT or if you are interested in strengthening your skills to increase your opportunity to take on a new challenge in the university. Understanding RIT’s recruitment and application process, the resources available to you and what is expected of all applicants is an important first step in managing your career.


As a potential candidate in RIT’s competitive job market, it is important to set yourself apart from other applicants. As a current employee at the university, you have the advantage of already understanding the RIT culture and the RIT CORE Values, and knowing what a wonderful community RIT is to be a member of.


As RIT seeks to enhance its position as a world-class university in our ever changing environment, the growth and development of RIT's richest resources; the staff and faculty will be instrumental in achieving this strategic initiative.


Career development is a personal commitment by the employee to encourage personal growth and job satisfaction. RIT as a whole benefits when employees are in a position where they can provide the best customer services, where they are happy and when they are satisfied in their career. Sessions: 

Workshop I: Managing Your Career at RIT

This session gives participants the opportunity to determine their personal skills, interests, and values. This essential first step in the career development process is critical in finding where you fit within the organization, and through self assessment, will give you a better understanding of yourself, resulting in more satisfying personal and career goals, and an action plan on how to move forward.

Workshop II: Conveying your Personal Brand: Writing Effective Resumes and Cover Letters

An effective resume is one that conveys your personal brand and showcases the combination of abilities, skills and experiences that makes you an outstanding candidate for the job. Learn how to write a resume tailored to the specific job you’re applying for, including the proper format, the must-do’s and what to leave out. Information is also be provided on writing and formatting your cover letter to complement your resume.

Workshop III: Mastering the Job Interview

Your interview for a position is your time to market yourself as a strong candidate and is a pivotal point in the job recruitment process. This session overviews basic interview skills and also describes the behavioral interview. Behavioral interviewing is an interviewing style that allows you to expand your answers; to detail specific situations that apply the question; base your answers on past performances and experiences. Behavioral interviews are common at RIT and understanding how you will be interviewed is the first step in progressing to the next step.

Workshop IV: Change Management for Employees

Change is constant in the workplace and our university is right now working through and working up to several significant university wide changes. We all react to change in a slightly different way and accept change at our own, individual pace. However, there are well-defined stages associated with the change process, each presenting its own challenges and opportunities. This workshop provides employees with an understanding of the nature of change and guides you in identifying change management strategies that will benefit both you and your department. This workshop includes:

Workshop V: Getting Involved in the RIT Community

Are you interested in becoming a more active member of our campus community? There are many opportunities for you to get involved with students, faculty and staff from across the campus. Participation in activities outside of your normal position allows you to collaborate on projects with other members of the RIT community, develop your current skills as well as learn new skills. It is a great opportunity to learn more about services and areas of the campus that you may not be familiar with.

Workshop VI: Leadership and Management

In this session, the differences between managing and leading are explained in detail through multi media learning experiences as well as open dialogue. The identification of tasks, activities and behaviors that support effective management and leadership in relation to the RIT Core Values are discussed and help define your personal management style and leadership goals. Linking effective personal characteristics that are necessary for success in these roles is a main objective of this course.
