Provost Summer Intensive ASL and Deaf Culture Experience



The RIT Office of the Provost sponsors an annual program for selected RIT faculty/staff. The program is coordinated through the Department of American Sign Language and Interpreting Education at NTID. The aim of the program is to enhance interactions among Deaf and hearing members for our RIT Community.


Focus of the program:


Faculty and staff will:



  • develop basic conversational American Sign Language skills,

  • receive an introduction to Deaf culture, and

  • analyze and understand the dynamics of deaf and hearing interactions.

This program is designed for faculty and staff with no or minimal knowledge and skills of American Sign Language and/or Deaf Culture. This is open to faculty and staff who represent the various academic and non-academic areas of RIT, with the exception of the College of NTID.


Sessions


This is a three-week long program during the month of June at Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) Hall.


Week One:


Monday, June 11 – 9:00 am – Noon


Tuesday, June 12 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm


Wednesday, June 13 – 9:00 am – Noon


Thursday, June 14 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm


Friday, June 15 – 9:00 am – Noon



Week Two:


Monday, June 18 – 9:00 am – Noon


Tuesday, June 19 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm


Wednesday, June 20– 9:00 am – 4:00 pm


Thursday, June 21 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm


Friday, June 22 – 9:00 am – Noon


 Week Three:


Monday, June 25 – 9:00 am – Noon


Tuesday, June 26 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm


Wednesday, June 27 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm


Thursday, June 28 – 9:00 am – Noon


 Costs:


All program costs associated with this professional development experience will be assumed by the Institute. Lunch will be provided for full day sessions.


 Selection Process:


A total of fifteen participants will be supported by the Office of the Provost and ASLIE program.  Every effort will be made to ensure that the selected participants represent the diversity of roles and areas within the RIT Community. Participants will be selected based on the following:



  • Demonstrates an interest in learning American Sign Language, Deaf culture, and Deaf and hearing interactions

  • Ongoing contact with D/deaf individuals within RIT

  • Rationale for how use and continued development of American Sign Language would positively affect the RIT Community in the participant’s role

  • Willingness to participate in this program for three weeks (see dates above)


Program Expectations:


Participants are expected to:



  • Regularly attend ALL portions of the program

  • Satisfy all training objectives

  • Serve as ongoing "American Sign Language and deaf/hearing resource" for colleagues in their home departments throughout the academic year and use and consistently continue to develop their American Sign Language skills following this initial introduction.

Expected benefits of this program include greater cross-cultural exchange among hearing and D/deaf members of the RIT Community, as well as greater accessibility within the various facets of RIT for D/deaf faculty, staff and students.
